InDesign courses in Sydney

* List created in May 2014. We're trying to keep this list as up to date as possible. If there is a course missing please let us know & we’ll have it added.

* Disclaimer: My name is Daniel Walter Scott & I'm the InDesign trainer at Bring Your Own Laptop. Obviously I'm inclined to say our courses are the best but I've tried to be objective here. My wish as a career trainer is that people find learning InDesign fun and supportive - whether it's with us or any other of the great training centers in Sydney.

Sydney guide to choosing an InDesign course.

As an Adobe Authorised InDesign Instructor (ACI) I have taught at many, many different training centers in the Australia, England, Scotland, Wales & New Zealand. I’ve taught at some amazing Adobe training schools and some terrible ones. My advice when it comes to getting good InDesign tuition is to check these 5 things.

InDesign for personal use: If you’re looking to learn InDesign for use at home with your own personal work then you may be more inclined to choose a weekend or evening class. Likewise price might be more of a deciding factor in your decision making. So maybe one of the Adult learning centers is right for you.

InDesign for business use: For people looking to use InDesign at their job you’ll be looking for courses that run during the working week. Price is a factor for you but you’ll be prepared to pay more if the course can guarantee you’ll be able to use InDesign proficiently when you get back to work after the course. In my experience the more expensive courses tend be around the $700 for 2days. The higher price is not a guarantee of amazing training but it does mean training centers are able to pay for professional trainers. It also means they can offer after class support like phone and email support.

Check #1 Specialists:

Does the training school specialise in Adobe training or do they appear to focus on other courses. In my experience I’ve found that training organizations that do very infrequent classes tend to subcontract in trainers at the last minute and often have out of date or no course notes to give the trainer to work from. So check their website and see if InDesign training seems to be a priority for them.

Check #2 Trainers:

After everything is booked & paid for. It really comes down to how good your trainer is. All of the schools are teaching the same piece of software. The difference really comes down to how it is delivered. Don’t be afraid to ask to speak to your trainer before you book your course.

A quick 5 minute phone call and you’ll know if the trainer is any good. More importantly you’ll know whether the trainer and you are compatible. A check to do is to see if the trainer is an Adobe Authorized Instructor. What this means is that the trainer has completed the Adobe Certified Expert exam and has some type of teaching qualifications. Again this is no guarantee but at least this means they are knowledgeable in InDesign.

Check class numbers here as well. It doesn’t matter how good a trainer is if they are teaching to class of 20 then they aren’t going to be as effective as teaching class of 5.

How good is your trainer

Check #3 Aftercare:

Check what services the training school offers after their course. Some training centers offer free email and/or phone support. Because you’re totally new to InDesign this can be handy especially for your first few projects.

Another aftercare option that some training schools offer is a resit or refresh. Normally this means you can come back and redo you course within a certain time free of charge. This is great if you know that you might not get to try out your new InDesign skills straight away. Or if you feel like you are extremely new to this type of software - you can practice a while before returning and picking more the second time around.

Another option you might like is that some training centers offer video tutorial DVD’s after your course so you can kick back and recover different parts of your course at home.

Check #4 Courseware:

A good set of notes to look back at after your class is important. Training centers will either have their own notes or will use Adobe Classroom in a book to teach from. Both a valid ways of working but my preference to have customized notes.

The InDesign Classroom in a book option is better if you’re teaching yourself at home without a trainer. It’s very lengthy and goes into far too much detail for someone that is just starting out. I think quality notes that reflect the class exercise files you’re using in your actual course is a better option. So ask your potential training school what notes they have. They are unlikely to send you their notes to check as they are expensive to create and they wont want them to shared around without permission.

Check #5 Duration:

I’ve run many 1, 2 & 4 day InDesign intro classes over the years and I’ve found that someone with little or no previous experience with InDesign needs a 2 day class. Shorter courses can work but often with no time to practice and experiment so you’ll have to do that in your own time. The longer 4 day courses are for people that really want to learn everything about InDesign. They’ll cover the intro and intermediate/advanced features of the software.

City Desktop Training

4/60 York St, Sydney NSW 2000, Australia

VISIT WEBSITE

COURSE TITLE: INDESIGN ESSENTIALS

SUMMARY:

This InDesign course looks to be a good all round introduction to the software. City Desktop seem to be the oldest training center in Sydney with 25 years. They currently have a special offer on in their Sydney office which brings the course costs down to $630 (ex gst) which makes this a good price compared to the other training centers (Please note that this special price may not still be available - correct at May 2014). One of the nice things about City Desktop is that they have additional InDesign courses for when you get more advanced. They are an Adobe Authorized Training Center (AATC) so will be using Adobe Certified Instructors (ACI) for their courses. CD offer free resits & 12 months phone and email support, which I think, is essential for newbies. CD say they run courses with around 4-5 students but don't list their max class size. CD offer their InDesign Essentials course as a package called Desktop Publishing Package. This looks to include the InDesign course and a intro Photoshop and Illustrator course - but you’ll need to double check that as the website wasn’t super clear on what was included.

Dynamic Web Training

VISIT WEBSITE

COURSE TITLE: FAST TRACK TO INDESIGN CS6

SUMMARY:

Dynamic web training have a slick new website and the outline looks to cover everything you'll need to get started. Their course is a 3 day intro course - one day more than most other courses listed here but no problem having an extra day to make sure your skills are ready. My only issue is that they are still training an older version of InDesign CS6, while this is fine for some people lots of people will be using the later version of the software InDesign CC. Dynamic have a resit for up to 8 months after your course. They have 1 more advanced course 'InDesign CS6: Creating Long Documents' (2 days) which would be a nice follow on from this intro course. They also have a package deal where you do Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign & Acrobat over 9 days for $2250. Their class nice is nice and now. They use 'certified expert trainers' though I couldn't find exactly what that meant I assume it's Adobe Certified Experts (ACE). You get a completion certificate after your training.

Alpha Computer Consultants

Level 3, 123 Clarence Street, Sydney NSW 2000, Australia

VISIT WEBSITE

COURSE TITLE: INDESIGN LEVEL 1

SUMMARY:

The course outline looks pretty comprehensive and comparable to others in this list. They are supporting InDesign versions CC, CS6, CS5 and CS4. Alpha look to be Australia's 'longest servicing Adobe Authorised training provider' compared with City Desktop who report to be the oldest training center in Sydney. Their current price of $636 (ex gst) is a special price with 25% discounted. It doesn't say how long this special will be around for but it looks like it might be permanent. They also have an intermediate & advanced follow on courses which is good. They have a couple of package deals. Package 1 is their 3 InDesign courses (Level 1, 2 & 3) bundled together. This is a 5 day course and can be booked together for $1720 (ex gst). They also have another 8 day package called Publishing Level 1 where you can combine their Acrobat, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign & 'Integrating the software' for $2727 (ex gst). They have created their own 180 page course book. They are using ACI trainers with a minimum of 10 years experience. The course comes with a completion certificate. Alpha CC's unique selling point is the DVD you get after your class so you can watch our course again later. Alpha offer unlimited email support after your class. They have a free repeat of the course for up to six months.

Design Workshop Sydney

Level 6, 115 Pitt Street, Sydney, NSW 2000

VISIT WEBSITE

COURSE TITLE: ADOBE INDESIGN COURSES

SUMMARY:

Design Workshop Sydney offers cost-effective training for individuals or small groups, either in the classroom in Sydney's CBD, or onsite at your location within the greater Sydney area. The InDesign course is ideal for people who are beginners are self-taught and may be involved in the professions of architecture, interior design, marketing or fashion. Design Workshop Sydney offers relevant, skilled-based tuition by experienced qualified teachers however it is not clear from their website whether they are Adobe Certified.

The website is easy to navigate around and the InDesign page shows the course outline which is really useful. The one day InDesign course covers a wide variety so it’s a lot to take in but you definitely get good value and it’s useful that they also include a taster in web and interactive PDF knowledge.

Course notes are included but no mention of flash drives or certificates. Some training centres offer lunch but I don’t think Design Workshop Sydney does, however being located in the CBD indicates a variety of lunch options close by. Not sure about a resit but they do offer after-course support (not sure how long this post support is offered for).

A schedule of classes is available upon email request rather than on the website and most of the classes run each week of the year.

Overall an affordable centrally located option.

COURSE TITLE: ADOBE INDESIGN INTRODUCTION CS6

SUMMARY:

Odyssey isn’t currently running classes in Sydney. There are no public classes scheduled. Odyssey training looks to be based out of Brisbane but uses the Karstens conference centre for it's training in Sydney if/when they do run classes. I've been to events at Karstens and it's pretty nice in there. Odyssey training are teaching a slightly old version of InDesign (CS6) but this might be good people using this version of the software. This is correct at the time of building this list.

Billy Blue

171 Pacific Highway, North Sydney, NSW 2060

VISIT WEBSITE

COURSE TITLE: ADOBE CS BASIC

SUMMARY:

Billy Blue is a well-regarded design school. Their primary focus is on degree & diploma design courses but they have a separate section called Studio Sessions which are aimed at short courses. While they don't do a specific InDesign course they have the Adobe CS Basic course. This is a 3 day course that includes Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. They don't list what version they use but the course has CS in the name implying they use CS6 or below. The course cost is pretty low compared to many other courses list here. I couldn't find an indication of max class sizes on their site. This course looks to have a sound outline and the trainer on the site looks to have good practical experience but is not an Adobe Certified Instructor.

University of Sydney - Centre for Continuing Education

160 Missenden Road, Newtown NSW 2042

VISIT WEBSITE

COURSE TITLE: ADOBE INDESIGN COURSE: LEVEL 1

SUMMARY:

The University of Sydney is cheaper than all the other courses ($585) but with the trade off that they have higher capacity class size of 18. They have a different schedule from a lot of other training centers. They have a 2 day course but it's delivered a week apart. They also have some Sunday sessions which no one else has. The week break and the weekend dates will definitely suit some people. They have a certificate of completion for their course. They also give away a free flash drive at the course. I couldn't find any of their trainers that were Adobe Certified for InDesign. Not that Adobe Certification guarantee's great training it does show how keen a trainer is about keeping up to date with the software. They have a 6 months course resit which is good but they have a weird way to book your resit they say "Bookings may only be made by phone between 3pm and 5pm the day before the course is due to commence." Which might be a hard to work into your schedule. They have a free lunch as part of the course which is nice.

From their website Consultive Training don't look like they are running regular courses in Sydney. This could change so check their website for an update. They do have a free re-sit for up to 12months which is great. I love their website, modern, responsive & very well laid out. They run their training out of the Servcorp office in Sydney. COURSE TITLE: GRAPHIC DESIGN ADOBE CS5

SUMMARY:

Sydney Community College is a not-for-profit training center. They have a 2 day 'Graphic Design' course that is run over 2 weeks (currently consecutive Wednesdays). This covers Photoshop, InDesign & Illustrator in this time. To me this feels like you'd be squeezing a lot into just 2 days. This will work if you only want a quick overview of the 3 software packages. The split course dates (2 Wednesdays) will suit people that have tough time commitments and that can't be away from work/home for more than a day at a time. They are using an old version of the software (CS5) which is now 3 versions behind. They aren’t using Adobe Certified Instructors. They are very cheap in comparison to other courses though.

SUMMARY:

Raising the bar is in North Sydney and run a 2 day InDesign Essentials course using CS5. I'd say this version is a little old to be still teaching (released in 2010). While their outlines look to cover the basics well they need to update them as some still refer to CS4 (2008). They have a follow on advanced 1 day course to continue your new skills which is good. They have a good 4 month course resit, plus phone and email support for 12 months. It doesn't look like they use Adobe Certified Instructors or Experts.
