Web design course list in Sydney

* List created in December 2014. We're trying to keep this list as up to date as possible. If there is a course missing please let us know & we’ll have it added.

* Disclaimer: My name is Daniel Walter Scott & I'm a Web Design Trainer at Bring Your Own Laptop. Obviously, I'm inclined to say that our courses are the best but I've tried to be objective here. My wish as a career trainer is that people find learning web design fun and supportive - whether it's with us or any of the other great training centers in Sydney.

COURSE TITLE: WEB BOOTCAMP

SUMMARY:

As a Web Design Course Trainer at Bring Your Own Laptop, I’ve been able to craft the perfect introduction for people who are completely new to web design. The 5 day course starts with providing a basic understanding of HTML & CSS which is essential to learning about web design. We move into more complicated web techniques as the week progresses. We make sure it’s step by step with lots of time for everyone to practice before we move along. We (like others on this list) choose to use the latest version of Adobe’s Dreamweaver CC software to create our websites. Dreamweaver is a great tool that allows people who are more visual to use it’s ‘design view’ or people that prefer to use code to use it’s ‘code view’. The BYOL web course covers SEO practices so that your website will rank well on Google rankings. We’ll cover the all important ‘responsive web design’ so that your websites work well on mobile, on tablet as well as laptops. We have some extras that others don’t do like creating HTML emailers in Dreamweaver and how to use basic JQuery to make galleries & tabbed menus. We look at drop down menus and how Paypal can be used to take payments from your website. You will receive certificates when you complete our course. You also get a pretty comprehensive after class support including: the email address of your trainer, free 1 year course refresher, take home videos so you can refresh in your own time. At BYOL you can bring your own laptop or we’ll lend you one for the course free of charge (Mac or Pc).  I’m (Daniel Scott, the reviewer) one of the trainers here at BYOL.  I’ve been building website’s for 15 years (including this BYOL website) and I’ve been teaching web design courses for nearly as long. Drop me an email if you have any questions about our web design courses.

The Web School

COURSE TITLE: WEB DEVELOPMENT LEVEL 1

SUMMARY:

The Web School have a few different web design courses but I feel the best option from them is their Web Development Level 1 course. The course itself covers mainly HTML & CSS which is great for getting started. The Web School are one of the few that detail ‘responsive’ web design in their course outline. It’s really important to check if your web course covers this topic. Essentially, responsive web design means that your website will display well on mobile & tablet devices. Importantly there is a level 2 option. This means that when you've conquered your first few websites you can come back and go to the next level - Level 2 :) . The best thing about The Web Schools ‘Web Development Level 1’ is the free course resit. This is perfect for people who are really new to web and need to sit their web design course more than once to consolidate their new web design skills.

Seek / Dynamic Web Training

Level 11, 32 Walker Street, North Sydney , NSW 2060

COURSE TITLE: DREAMWEAVER & CSS PACKAGE

SUMMARY:

When you’re searching online for a course it can be a little confusing knowing how these two businesses are connected but Seek Learning owns Dynamic Web Training and has done since 2005. The nice thing about Seek/Dynamic is they have quite a range of courses - 20+ web design course options in fact. So many, that it can be hard to know which to pick. I’ve reviewed their options and my recommendation is their ‘Dreamweaver & CSS Package’. It’s a 5 day course and is broken into 2 parts. ‘Dreamweaver: Website Development (3 days) & Website Design Using CSS (2 days). This will give you a good overview of HTML & CSS. You’ll learn how to use one of the more popular web building software options; Adobe Dreamweaver. They are teaching an older version of Dreamweaver; CS6. There is quite a big different between CS6 and the newer version CC. So be sure you have the correct version before booking. Though I imagine Dynamic will be updating to the newer version eventually. The website doesn’t mention if they are using Adobe Certified Dreamweaver Instructors which can be a nice guarantee that the trainer is keeping their skills up to date. Their training looks like a solid all round course. They teach on PC only which can be a pain for people who prefer to work on Macs. They also have a shorter 3 day course called ‘HTML and CSS Package’ to get you up to speed with HTML & CSS. There is no mention of support post-course. Post care email or phone support is super helpful when you are new to web design.

Let's Build a Website

Surry Hills & Brookvale (no exact address given on the website)

COURSE TITLE: WORDPRESS COURSE – 2 DAYS

SUMMARY:

Lets Build a Website is run by Jodi Allbon, a successful Web Designer in her own right. Her company runs web design training courses as well as web design services. The good thing about that is that you know the trainer is likely to have up to date experience. Let’s Build A Website uses Wordpress to build it’s websites. Wordpress is a great option for someone who wants to build a website but doesn’t want to learn any coding. There are many benefits for using Workpress; no coding, it has ready built plugins, it’s super easy to add content. There are some drawbacks to using Wordpress - Wordpress is built on templates. So you’ll have to find a robust template that will cover everything you need for your website. You will need professional help if you need to customise your Wordpress template. The course is very short - which is actually fine if you are using Wordpress. The website states that you’ll be able to create a website in only 1 day, and using a Wordpress template, this is true. Remember this is a no-coding training option so you won’t learn any HTML & CSS during this session. The course has a maximum of only 5 students, which is the lowest out of any web course reviewed here. This means loads of one on one trainer time for the students. The course comes with free email & online support which is great.

COURSE TITLE: LEARN TO BUILD RESPONSIVE WEBSITES

SUMMARY:

The course description provides a great outline of what is covered. They cover all the basics of HTML & CSS as well as looking at responsive website design. The only problem with the course is the strict entry requirements. They are asking for a Certificate IV or above in Graphic Design. They ‘strongly recommend’ design knowledge before the course starts and technical skills in Adobe Illustrator & Adobe Photoshop. While all of those things are useful before you learn to build a website I don’t think it should be a prerequisite. This course feels more like a finishing school for graphic designers. If you’re a graphic designer, you’re in luck because the course outline looks great. This web design course uses Mac software called Coda 2. Like Dreamweaver, Coda 2 helps you write HTML & CSS and is a industry standard piece of software. Coda 2 isn’t available on Mac but Shillington’s outline explains that they will set PC users up with similar PC friendly software.

COURSE TITLE: ESSENTIALS WITH HTML, CSS & JAVASCRIPT

SUMMARY:

The course is called ‘Essentials’ and I wouldn’t expect to leave the course ready to start building your own websites right away. This course consists of 2x 5 hour days to cover quite a lot ground. I’m a web design trainer and I know we just get through HTML & CSS in the first 3 days of our course. They include Javascript (normally a 3-5 day learning curve), so I think you’ll only get a really brief overview of the technology. This course is perfect for someone who wants to see if web design is for them but you’ll need to be prepared to do some more learning. Luckily UOS has lots of other classes you can attend after this one including PHP, MySQL and Joomla courses. Because the course runs on a weekend it’s perfect for people that can’t get any time away from work to learn during the week. There isn’t any follow up support after class mentioned which can be tough for people who are new to web design. My feeling is that the courses are too short to get someone up and running in one go - but the trade off is that they are really cheap so attending more than one course isn’t a huge cost.

COURSE TITLE: DREAMWEAVER HTML & CSS COURSE

SUMMARY:

The course outline is short but so is the course (2 days). However, the content of the 2 day course is a very good way to get started. You won't learn any of the sexy parts of web design but you will learn how to create HTML & CSS sheets as well as how to upload your website. The Tafe Sydney web design course runs over 2 consecutive Saturdays which will attract people who are learning in their own time. A week break between the 2 days can be useful if you use the time to study but I find a week break in the middle of a very short course like this tends to be a disadvantage. If the timing and cost of this course attracts you I’d make sure you book yourself at least 2 nights practice time so you can come back to class ready and with some questions to ask. This course doesn’t have a free resit like the BYOL and City Desktop courses which is a disadvantage if you’re really new to the idea of web design. Tate Sydney are using Dreamweaver to teach this course. It doesn’t mention which version of the software they are using. My advice is to double check what they are using before you sign up. Dreamweaver CC is the lastest version and is very different from the older versions; CS5, CS6 etc. This course won’t cover ‘responsive’ web design which has become a necessity for web training these days. It’s not a huge problem because this course is so short and there is only so much you can learn in 2 days. You will need to be prepared to teach yourself how responsive and fluid web design works if you want to optimize your site for mobile devices. The site mentions access to ‘supplementary learning resources’. They don’t really explain what they are, probably/hopefully a training manual.

COURSE TITLE: RESPONSIVE WEB DESIGN

SUMMARY:

This course outline impresses me. The course website itself is using some nice up to date web design techniques which is always good. So many web design course websites are themselves poorly designed websites, which makes it hard to trust their credibility. This course is a ‘responsive’ website design course which is definitely a plus and not all web courses mention this. Essentially, responsive means you’ll be learning how to build a website that works and adjusts for different screen sizes e.g. Mobile, Tablet & Desktop. Not all web courses are teaching responsive web design and if it was me I’d make sure the course I booked touched on it. The disadvantages for this course is that Billy Blue offer no after course support. Others in this list offer email support after your class which I find is super useful when you’re trying to build your first website. There is no free resit which BYOL & City Desktop offer. I think it’s important to be able to go away, practise and come back to refresh your skills. I like that they have a bio on your web design trainer Mark Gorski. Mark looks to have ample experience in web development which is really important. The prerequisites are only basic computer skills but jumping straight into responsive web design rather than moving through basic HTML & CSS will be a big jump for people who have no experience in web design - fast learners will be fine jumping in here though.

General Assembly

Level M, 56-58 York St, Sydney 2000, Australia

COURSE TITLE: PROGRAMMING FUNDAMENTALS FOR NON-PROGRAMMERS

SUMMARY:

Now - General Assembly is a really cool training company. They offer a huge range of courses. They don’t repeat courses as regularly as most of the other training companies on this list. While I couldn’t find any courses currently running about introductory HTML & CSS, they do make up for this by having a huge selection of other courses. The course listed here is about programming for non-programmers. I don’t know anyone else doing such unique courses. General Assembly has a range of short courses. A lot run after work hours so you can use you’re own time to up skill. They do have more regular courses, but they are a lot more intensive full time, 12 week web design courses. This review looks at short courses but if you’re looking into a longer course you should check out their website. While the course listed above doesn’t exactly match our intro web design short course profile it gives you a taste of what they offer and their prices. Check out this list of courses that would work for someone starting off in web design, they don’t currently have dates but you can sign up to their emailer and they will let you know when the course will start. Find Your Style: Getting Started with HTML & CSS, Coding for Beginners: HTML and CSS, Code in One Day: HTML & CSS Crash Course. The courses General Assembly run don’t mention free resits.

Academy of Information Technology

1-19 Kelly St, Ultimo NSW 2007, Australia

VISIT WEBSITE

COURSE TITLE: INTRO TO HTML

SUMMARY:

The Academy of Information Technology specialise in longer diploma or bachelor courses but also run 2 day short courses. In the list of ‘pro’s’ is that it is cheap and I imagine the trainers are the same ones that run the bachelor programs so they should be uber qualified to run a short course. On the less positive side is that they don’t really provide a detailed description of what is covered in the course. The ‘Intro to HTML’ course provides a paragraph about what is covered but that is it. This paragraph is really broad so I don’t know what direction they will take the course. They do have a second course called ‘Web Design’ that uses Adobe Muse to teach web design. Adobe Muse is a new product from Adobe and is pretty amazing but doesn’t let you learn any fundamentals of web design. Muse is aimed at people that want to design a website without code. The trade off is that you can only create a website within the boundaries of Adobe Muse so it’s very restrictive. When I reviewed their course (December 2014) there were no dates online. I’m assuming they will be posted when the new academic year is ready. There is no free resit and no trainer support after class which isn’t really a surprise considering the cost of the course.
Note: If the training manager has a better description I’d love for them to send it to me so I can include it in the review.

Sydney Dev Camp

85 William Street, Darlinghurst, 2010

VISIT WEBSITE

COURSE TITLE: DEV CAMP

SUMMARY:

This web course teaches a programming language called Ruby on Rails. RoR is a niche language that is proving a very employable skill for those who know it well. My advice would be to learn HTML & CSS well before moving into the more complex world of RoR development. This course is aimed at people who want to become a web developer rather than a web designer. The industry is similar but web developers tend to handle more technical ‘back end’ parts of a website. If you enjoy code and technical problem solving then this course is for you. If you are more of a visual person and prefer designing the look and usability of a website then look at one of the other courses listed here that deals more with HTML & CSS rather than Ruby on Rails. If you are ready for Ruby on Rails training then this place seems like a great place to learn. They have a clear outline about what is covered during the 10 weeks. I like their holistic approach to learning. They mention yoga & relaxation techniques as part of their training. It’s a full time course with 9 - 5 work hours. They seem to have connections to industry as well, which will make getting a full time job afterwards a lot easier - especially as RoR developers are in hot demand at the moment.
