Photoshop CC tutorial 13: Making a layer mask.

Layer masks

  1. File > Open > Photoshop Exercise Files > Masking > Gun.jpg.
  2. Rename the background layer by double clicking the words Background in the layers panel.
  3. Name it ‘Gun’.

    New Layer

    Select a layer

  4. Click the Layer Mask button at the bottom of the layers panel layer mask icon .
  5. Your layer will have a blank mask over the background.

    Add a layer mask

  6. Choose the Brush tool.
  7. Make sure your mask is selected by clicking on the mask thumbnail in the Layers panel.
  8. Paint around the image using the colour Black (to add to the mask) and White (to remove the mask). See example below: as you paint with Black on the mask, the background on the image is removed (leaving the grey and white transparent background).

Note: You will need various brush sizes and hardness settings to complete a job. Experiment with a variety of brush settings.

Shortcut note: Click once with the brush tool and move to another position on the image. Hold down the shift key and click again. This will join the two points creating a line.

Shortcut note: Use the ‘x’ key on your keyboard to toggle between your foreground (black) and background (white).
